Martyr Hesychius (of Antioch) (IV)
The holy Martyr Hesychius of Antioch (IV) lived in the time of the Emperor Maximian Galerius (305–311) and held an honourable position at the emperor’s court. Maximian issued an edict by which Christians were driven out of military service. Whoever did not renounce Christianity had to take off his soldier’s belt, give up his rank, and become a hired servant. Saint Hesychius remained faithful to his faith. Maximian ordered him to take off his noble’s garments, put on coarse clothing of rough cloth, and serve in the servants’ quarters. Some days later the emperor summoned Saint Hesychius and asked him: “Art thou not ashamed to be in such dishonour?” The saint answered: “The honour I had from thee is temporary.” By Maximian’s order Saint Hesychius was drowned in a river.
