St Eustathius of Bithynia (IX)

Saint Eustathius of Bithynia (IX) held unceasing prayer to the Lord to be the greatest virtue. The monk, distinguished by humility, wisdom, great faith, love of his neighbour and a virtuous life, was appointed Bishop of Bithynia, and for many years governed his flock wisely. When the heresy of iconoclasm held sway, Saint Eustathius fearlessly denounced the heretics. The holy father was denounced to the emperor and seized, and later exiled. After three years of persecution Saint Eustathius died in exile.
