Description

Aged-Wooden Byzantine Icon of Saint Macarius Notaras, Bishop of Corinth.

Saint Macarius Notaras was born in 1731 in Trikala, Corinth to a wealthy family. At the age of 15, he went to Kefalonia to study with the teacher Efstathios, while after a few years he returned to his hometown to teach for free.

In 1764, Macarius was elected to the Metropolis of Corinth. In the following years travellded in many parts of Greece, but mainly in Patmos where he founded the sanctuary of All Saints and in Chios where, for about 15 years, he was engaged in the study and writing of religious books.

Saint Macarius Notaras died in 1805 in Chios.

Troparion The city of Chios sings divine hymns to Makarios, the Archbishop of Corinth, / for in Heaven he is received by the Hierarchs; and also by the Martyrs, since he trained them for contest; / and by the Ascetics, since he was one of their number. / Through his prayers, O Christ our God, save our souls. The aging technique is meticulously applied to the Icon by hand and gives it the look of time while the depiction retains its artistic details.

Around the perimeter, the aging becomes more apparent with frayed edges that give the Icon a distinctive appearance.

During the final processing, the Aged-Wooden Icon of Saint Macarius Notaras is polished with a special varnish to withstand time.

Note: The final Icon may slightly differ from the catalog photo.
