Description

Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of James the Apostle, Brother of God.

James the Apostle is called "Brother of God" because he was a son of Joseph, and by extension the brother of Jesus Christ, before his marriage to the Virgin Mary. Although he did not initially follow his brother's teaching, he finally believed in His power when He appeared before him, after the Resurrection.

From that moment, he devoted himself to the spread of Christianity and became the first Bishop of Jerusalem. According to tradition, James the Apostle composed the first Divine Liturgy, which was later edited again by Basil the Great and Saint John Chrysostom .

His righteous leadership, as well as his steadfast faith and service to the Lord, angered the Jews, who beat him to death.
