Description

Handmade Byzantine Icon of Saint Xenia of Kalamata.

Saint Xenia was born in 291 AD in Kalamata, Peloponnese and was raised with a Christian education. Her parents were originally from Italy but fled to Kalamata due to the persecution of Christians.

The beauty of Saint Xenia impressed the prefect Dometianos, who demanded to marry her. However, Saint Xenia steadfastly refused to renounce her faith and embrace paganism. Enraged by her decision, Dometian ordered her to be severely tortured, but even then, Saint Xenia did not change her mind.

Finally, in 318 AD Dometian ordered her beheading.
